Please Aim Properly

I was in Frankfurt and Munich last autumn, and when I went to shop at one of their malls, I saw a pile of sai sitting on the toilet bowl seat itself. I therefore learned first hand that German sai and Singaporean sai are the same colour no matter what race, language or religion we subscribe to. It also confirmed my suspicion that even though Harry Kane can be a world class goal scorer at Bayern Munich, the typical average German also would miss the target whenever they are going to lao sai in their public toilets. You can tell the German toilet user to aim for the centre of the toilet bowl when they are about to pang sai, but they'll still miss and land their sai on the edge of the toilet bowl seat. It's like taking a penalty kick and hitting the goalpost.

Hair for Hope 2026

Just walked in to the Hair for Hope eventually at Bright Hill Monastery and got my scalp shaven. For me it's business as usual because I have gone bald most of the time these days, so the charitable event is just an ordinary haircut for me.  Still, I bother to post this response because I saw lots  […]

To the Hell with you

I am not against Amos Yee, but I also will not support him. To me, serving my time in the army as an enlistee is a privilege, as well as a right. I was downgraded to PES C9L3 after dislocating my left shoulder and being diagnosed with marfan syndrome, so I wasn't able to take on combat fit roles.  […]

iHub

I used to work here at Jurong Town Hall in the year 2010. Back then it was known as iHub, and it was a commercial venue for startups growing in Singapore. I have fond memories of the place, because it was my first time joining a startup company then known as Greenwave Reality Pte Ltd.  My career  […]

No Hanky Panky

My bosses are working with Building and Construction Authority (BCA) on the Brizay Park bungalow project bought by Minister Tan See Leng, and there is really a good measure of integrity and accountability by the authorities to ensure that the project is clean and untainted. BCA doesn't give leeway  […]

Nervous

My late Zen roshi Adam used to keep repeating this over and over again: "It is not what the world does or does not do that is the problem. It is what I do and do not do, that is MY problem! No matter what religion one believes in, there are always some form of discipline necessary to teach a  […]

Essentials of a Professional Funeral Director

The lifelong learning course I have been waiting for is finally here. I registered for it once the new run dates are made available when the clock struck midnight, and paid S$490.50 for the course fees. It is quite expensive for a three day course, but throughout Singapore there are very few  […]

Qing Ming 2026

Very grateful for a fuss free Qing Ming observance this afternoon. I spent around two decades fighting the views and traditions of Christianity and Buddhism, because my paternal grandparents died as Christians while my maternal grandparents died as Buddhists, so there was a gap in religious views  […]

A Simpler Afterlife

Some people believe in YOLO ie you only live once. Because of YOLO, the result is that YODO ie you only die once. If you believe in YODO, it makes sense to have a good funeral and cremation arrangements. For me, I am a Zen Buddhist and I believe in cyclical existence or reincarnation. This means  […]

Rough Sleeping

When my maternal grandmother was dying, I tried rough sleeping at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Changi Airport. I couldn't sleep well at home knowing that she is struggling to stay alive at the hospital, I just wanted to get out of the flat and be with her somehow. For TTSH, the lobby was really a nice  […]

Road Safety

I still remember several years back I was on a double decker bus which got into a chain collision with two other buses. I wasn't injured, but the buses' windscreens were shattered and diesel was leaking under the hot sun. On that occasion, a beautiful Traffic Police officer named Stephanie Cheung  […]

Something in the Family

My Buddhist spinister aunt confided in me something going on for the past six years which I find peculiar but I'm not sure how to advise her: she got to know this friend K who is also a Buddhist since six years ago, and they have been discussing the Buddha's teachings over WhatsApp almost every  […]

Grateful for a Sound Judicial System in Singapore

This afternoon, Dr Prof Ko Wen Je of Taiwan is found guilty of corruption and sentenced to around 17 years of imprisonment. His fellow suspects are also being sentenced. I don't want to judge the Taiwanese judicial system, but it does make me feel appreciative of the Singapore judicial system for  […]

Packing My Luggage

Settling down this evening to pack my luggage bag for the Short Term Monastic Novitiate Retreat which I signed up for this coming April. I still have a month to go, but I am trying to get ready in advance.   When I look at the checklist of items to bring, I feel as if I'm going for an overseas  […]

Work As Per Usual

I am a self-employed engineer. My semi-official job title is Computer Aided Design (CAD) Technician. I report to my maternal aunt, a qualified structural engineer, and help her out with analysing and drafting bits and parts of building construction drawings. Because it's a family business, I don't  […]

Destigmatisation at the Workplace

Before I start, I have to indicate how I wish to end. Mental illness is not a terminal disease, it may seem like an invisible form of cancer, but like all cancers it can be treated. Hence it is important to work closely with your medical team, caregivers, friends and family to overcome each obstacle  […]

Yet Another Lunar 27th

Just came back from the Lunar 27th puja at KMS. Reached the temple early, but still couldn't find a spare cushion or chair, so had to be placed on the pseudo waiting list. Eventually a space was made available, so I managed to complete the repentance ritual and obtain two bottles of Great  […]

Going Home

My dad messaged me early this morning to complain about the faulty HP printer. The printer has only been used once or twice in the past nine years since it was bought, so my guess straightaway was that the ink has dried up and the nozzles / printheads are faulty. It's a good thing that I have free  […]
