Grateful for a Sound Judicial System in Singapore

This afternoon, Dr Prof Ko Wen Je of Taiwan is found guilty of corruption and sentenced to around 17 years of imprisonment. His fellow suspects are also being sentenced.

I don't want to judge the Taiwanese judicial system, but it does make me feel appreciative of the Singapore judicial system for being clean, upright and incorrupt.

In Singapore, for trials against popular figures such as Venerable Ming Yi, TT Durai and Pastor Kong Hee, I find that the sentences being meted out to the convicted are not controversial and are based on a sound judgement and honest and impartial ruling.

Similarly, all these years when the judicial system is invoked by the ruling People's Action Party, most of the time it is for the purpose of acting against defamation. I cannot recall the details, but I remember infamous opposition figures such as J. B. Jeyaretnam, Roy Ngerng, Chee Soon Juan, Tang Liang Hong, just to name a few names that come to mind, the PAP leadership are not incredulous in their attacks. They made sound and reasoned objectives which was to properly silence their political opponents and require them to abide by the well established doctrines of Singapore justice system. Defamation is not the same as corruption, the PAP doesn't go around claiming that their opponents are corrupt without proof.

In cases where corruption is detected, most of the time the PAP does cleansing from within instead of without. Teh Cheang Wan and S Iswaran were two PAP ministers accused of corruption, and in both cases the PAP led by example, taking out the cancerous fragments of the overall body before the spread becomes rampant. The PAP sets high expectations of themselves and they expect their key stakeholders to hold themselves accountable to the high salaries that they draw.

In brief, I trust the ruling party here in Singapore. I am thankful that I don't need to go to the streets to protest against the government because our sound and stable judicial system allows us to sleep properly at night without worrying in excess.
