Zero Hunger
I used to be an online volunteer with United Nations, and back then as a volunteer I actively promoted the Sustainable Development Goals. One of the primary goals of the SDGs is "Zero Hunger". More specifically, it is to "End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture".
I counted my blessings that I had a proper UN framework to work with as part of my activism, because the support of UN made things move a lot faster and a lot smoother. It was better than starting my own non-profit and trying to change the world with my own fiscal savings. Working with UN, I campaigned for zero hunger and I coordinated activists from around the world to improve agricultural practices and literally put more food on the table.
I have since parted ways with the UN to focus on my own grassroot project here in sunny island Singapore, where I plant greens such as vegetables and herbs in a community garden which I serve with. Singapore has a “30 by 30” vision, which is to produce 30 per cent of its nutritional needs locally by 2030, and there is a growing demand for sustainable agriculture domestically. My project is still a work in progress, but I am still learning more along the way. As an urban farmer this very day, I became thankful for all the conditions necessary to bring plants to ripening. Whether the soil, the nutrients, the rain, the sun, the wind, the earthworms, and so on so forth, there is so much to consider when we are actively growing greens instead of just talking about it in theory.
